Logo latte art is exactly what it sounds like: your logo printed right on the foam of a latte, made to order at your event. A latte art printer does it in a few seconds per drink using edible ink, so every guest gets a coffee topped with your brand, a wedding monogram or any custom design you send.
We bring our latte art printer to events around Indianapolis for companies, couples and schools. Here's how it works, how to design for it and exactly what to send us.
How does a latte art printer work?
Think of a small inkjet printer where the paper is milk foam and the ink is edible. The barista makes the drink, sets the cup under the print head, and the printer lays the image onto the surface of the foam. A few seconds later, the drink goes to the guest.
A few things to know about how it behaves:
It needs foam. Lattes, cappuccinos and drinks topped with cold foam give the ink a smooth, stable surface. Drinks with no foam, like black coffee, don't have anything to print on.
It works on iced drinks with cold foam. Cold foam holds a print the same way steamed milk does. At a Navy Federal Credit Union conference, we did cold foam latte art from a co-branded cart.
It's sharpest right away. As a drink sits and the foam settles, the edges of the image soften. That's why we print just before handing the cup over.
It doesn't get in the way of the coffee. The ink is food-safe, and each print uses only a tiny amount.
How do you design logo latte art that prints well?
The foam is a small circle with a soft surface, so simple designs read clearest. Our printer prints [ALINA: in full color, or in a single brown tone?], and these tips apply either way:
Go high-contrast. Bold, dark shapes on a light background print cleanly. Faint gradients, drop shadows and pale colors fade into the foam.
Use your simplest mark. An icon, symbol or monogram prints better than a full logo with a tagline. If you have a stacked or badge version, send that.
Skip small text. Thin fonts and fine lines blur on foam. If you want words, keep it to one or two short words in a bold typeface.
Design for a circle. The printable area is round, so square and circular designs fill it well. A very wide wordmark ends up tiny once it fits the cup.
Leave breathing room. A bit of empty space around the design keeps it clear of the cup's edge.
If you're not sure your logo will work, send it anyway. We'll let you know if a simpler version would print better.
Logo latte art ideas by event type
Brand activations
If the goal is photos and social posts, printed lattes do a lot of that work for you. Guests photograph a drink with a logo on it before they take a sip. Pair it with a branded cart and cups, and the whole coffee station becomes part of the activation. See how we set these up on our brand activation coffee cart page.
Corporate events and conferences
At a conference booth, a printed latte gives people a reason to stop and a reason to remember whose booth it was. For Baker Tilly, we printed their logo on lattes. It works just as well for employee appreciation days, client events and all-day conferences, which we cover on our corporate events coffee cart page.
Weddings
For weddings, the printer can put your monogram, your initials and wedding date, or a simple illustration on every latte. It's a small detail guests notice, and it ties the coffee into the rest of your wedding design. Read more about our wedding coffee cart in Indianapolis.
School events
School logos and mascots tend to be bold and simple, which is exactly what prints well on foam. They're a fun fit for teacher appreciation, alumni events and school celebrations. Our school events coffee cart page has more ideas.
What else can you brand at a coffee cart?
The foam is only one spot. A fully branded coffee station usually pulls in a few of these.
Cart wraps. The cart itself can be wrapped in your logo, wedding theme or party colors. At Victory Field, our cart was wrapped in the Indianapolis Indians logo, and Rowdie, the team's mascot, stopped by. For Navy Federal Credit Union's conference, we ran a co-branded cart.
Branded cups. Custom stickers or stamps put your logo on every cup, including iced drinks and anything without foam. Guests at WedSociety's Indy wedding community event got WedSociety-branded cups, and Arcwood Environmental's event had custom-branded cups of its own.
Custom menus and signature drinks. A menu sign built around your event is branding people read while they wait in line. For the IU Champions Dinner, we made a custom menu with themed lattes named "Tailgate," "Candystripe" and "Hoosier's Favorite." Signature drinks and seasonal flavors can be added to any coffee cart menu.
What to send us: a quick checklist
Getting your branding right starts with the files. Here's what helps:
Logo file. A high-resolution PNG with a transparent background, or a vector file (SVG, PDF, AI or EPS).
A simplified version. An icon, symbol or monogram-only version, if you have one.
A one-color version. Dark artwork on a transparent background gives the cleanest print.
Brand colors. Useful for cart wraps and cup stickers.
Wording. Signature drink names, a hashtag or anything you want on a menu sign.
For weddings. Your monogram or initials, your date and the general look you want.
Timing. Send artwork [ALINA: how far ahead we need artwork for latte art, cup stickers or stamps, and cart wraps] before your event.
Once we have your files, [ALINA: do we send a test-print photo for approval before the event? Describe the proof step here.]
Frequently asked questions
Does latte art printing work on iced drinks?
Yes, as long as the drink has cold foam on top. The foam gives the ink a surface to sit on, so an iced latte without foam won't hold a print. Branded cups cover the iced drinks that skip the foam.
Is the printed ink safe to drink?
Yes. Latte art printers use edible, food-safe ink, and each print uses only a small amount. Guests are drinking a normal latte with a design on top.
Can you print a photo instead of a logo?
Photos can print, but results vary. A high-contrast photo with a clear subject, like a close-up face or a pet, reads much better on foam than a busy group shot. For logos and monograms, simpler is always clearer.
What if we want branding on drinks that don't have foam?
That's where the cups and the cart come in. Custom cup stickers or stamps, a cart wrap and a custom menu sign put your brand in front of every guest, whether they order a latte, an iced drink or a hot chocolate.
